ZCOM for TCP/IP
Overview
The ZCOM for TCP/IP series of communications components are a set
of full-featured clients and servers that are intended to be used in applications that require data transfer and remote program calls to another system.
There are two distinct server implementations:
There are five distinct client implementations:
| Client |
Intended Environment |
|
ZCOM for Windows |
Windows Desktop, COM/ActiveX
Interface (DLL) |
|
ZCOM for .NET |
Windows Desktop or Windows
Server, .NET assembly (DLL) |
|
ZCOM for Java |
Desktop or Server,
implemented as Java class (ZcomJava.class) |
|
ZCOM for Pocket
PC |
Runs on any Windows Mobile
device, including Pocket PC or Windows Smartphone (.NET
DLL). |
|
ZCOM for ILE |
Runs on AS/400 as ILE module
(can be incorporated into CL or RPG programs). |
A detailed feature chart can be viewed
here.
Servers:
 |
ZCOM for AS/400 Server
This server runs directly on the AS/400 and has been
designed to be easy to integrate with existing applications.
This server is very reliable and efficient, making careful
use of AS/400 resources. |
 |
ZCOM for Java Server.
Although the Java version of the ZCOM server could be
run on an AS/400, it is more typically used on an NT or
Unix platform. Program calls are made to Java
classes, and a SOAP pass-through function can be used to
communicate with SOAP servers. |
Clients:
 |
ZCOM for Windows.
This client is most often used in client-based
desktop applications where highly reliable and
secure communications are needed to one or more
back-end host systems. The large number of
pre-built integration functions that exist in the
Windows client makes it easy to incorporate into new
or existing applications. |
 |
ZCOM for .NET.
This client component is similar to the Windows
client except that it consists of 100% managed
code (written in C#). Also, the encryption
for the .NET client uses a 448-bit key, making
it very secure. This is also an ideal
client for middleware applications (e.g., SOAP
methods, Biztalk servers, IIS applications,
etc.). |
 |
ZCOM for Java.
For customers using Java, this
client provides the same level of
functionality as the other members of the
ZCOM client family. Although it can be
used on the desktop, it is probably more
typically used in a servlet or as a
component in a .JSP page.
|
 |
ZCOM
for Pocket PC. This
specialized client shares 99% of the
code base of the ZCOM for .NET client,
providing all of the most commonly used
features of the other ZCOM clients in
less than a 50K DLL. |
 |
ZCOM for
ILE. For applications
that are written in CL or RPG, the
ZCOM for ILE client provides the
ability to communicate with the same
back-end servers as the other ZCOM
clients.
